How much should it cost to have a ceiling popcorn texture scraped off and orange peel sprayed on. 12'X12' room

The room is carpeted, covered with drop cloths and everything is masked.

Some guy told me $4,000 dollars! How much should it cost to have a ceiling popcorn texture scraped off and orange peel sprayed on. 12'X12' room
without seeing the actuall job i would guess 1500-2000. whenever i do a job like that i charge hourly for removing the popcorn and repairing whatever damages may need to be fix. sometimes u can strip a cieling that size in a few hours sometimes it has taken nearly 2 days. another factor is cieling hieght anything over 10 ft high i charge extra for. the orange peel itself should only cost around 500-800 to install. once again most of the cost and time is in the prep work. How much should it cost to have a ceiling popcorn texture scraped off and orange peel sprayed on. 12'X12' room
$3995
Sounds like he really didnt want the work, heheh

Your biggest hassle is going to be getting the old popcorn texture off... since youve already got plastic down, I'd suggest you go ahead and do it yourself.

I use sharp floor scrapers, or taping knives, to scrape off old popcorn texture. Wear safety glasses, and respirators....it will get dirty/dusty in there, hehehe. Most old popcorn textures use cellulose (paper), or polystyrene to make the 'popcorn'....but some few also had some fiberglass in them...which can make you itch. If you notice you are beginning to itch quite a bit, then I'd suggest wearing work gloves, and long sleeves, or there is a hand cream that forms an 'invisible' shield on your skin. If the fiberglass makes you itch (bothers some people more than others) wash with COLD water. This helps close the skin pores, keeping the fiberglass from getting in any deeper, hehehe.

Once you have the popcorn scraped off, you may need to do a little sanding, or drywall patch (i.e., gouge marks from the scrapers, hehe).

An orange peel texture can be applied using a hopper gun, and air compressor. You can rent both, if you dont own them. Homex makes a nice little kit too.... its only a plastic spray gun, and uses a half gallon jug as the 'hopper', but for a small job like this, it would work just fine. If you are really careful about cleaning out the gun afterwards, you can use it several times yet. I like to make a couple of practice shots on some scrap plastic draped over a piece of plywood, or sheetrock, before starting on the ceiling, just to get the 'swing' of it.

Or you may get a more reasonable estimate, if all you need done is the orange peel, hehehe.

I'd be asking for other estimates for certain, as it sounds like that particular fellow priced himself too high.

Have Fun
