What is wrong with the texture of my English muffins?

My family loves homemade English muffins, so I make them often. The taste is great, but the texture is off. The air bubbles are small and uniform unlike the commercial muffins with large irregular holes. Here is my recipe any ideas would be appreciated

1c warm water

1T yeast

1tsp sugar

2tsp salt

1/4 c oil

3c all purpose flour

Add yeast to water and sugar , when dissolved add salt, oil and flour. Knead a little. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness cut into 3 1/2 inch rounds. Put on cookie sheet covered with cornmeal. Let rise 1 hour. Cook on ungreased griddle for 7 minutes each side. Split sides with fork.

It is an old family recipe and my cousin and I both have the same results and would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. What is wrong with the texture of my English muffins?
Cheffy's right on the money with the double proofing. One thing strikes me, though, and that's the 录 inch thickness. That's too shallow and, in the process, crushes the dough too much after knocking back. Roll them lightly and quickly to no less than 陆 inch, so twice the height, and then proof them the second time. Your individual dough discs will have more volume to allow the yeast action to expand with, which will give you a more open texture when cooked.

Hope this helps, and good luck! What is wrong with the texture of my English muffins?
After mixing the dough cover the bowl with plastic and refrigerate it for about 15 hours. WHen you take out let it warm up for 1 hour.

Get some Muffin Rings. They help a lot.
After you knead the dough, put it in a bowl and let it rise (proof) for about an hour, then punch it down, then roll it out, cut it, and let it rise like the recipe says. That initial proofing will probably help you.

Edit: BTW, that sounds like an awesome recipe, I'm gonna have to try it, I've never made them before.

Exfoliate and moisturize! Try lush cosmetics. Their products are amazing and all-natural.How can i improve the texture of my body skin?
You need something which will gently exfoliate and moisturize at the same time. I recommend either the oatmeal sugar cookie bar or the apple cider bar from Breezy Beach Wear (http://www.breezybeachwear.com)

The oatmeal bar is made with all-natural ingredients and is a great moisturizier. The Coco-nutty bar, made with real shredded coconut is great too. The apple cider bar is made with real apple peels, cinnamon, raw sugar, and olive oil. Its great for skin like yours.

Follow up with a body lotion containing lactic acid. Good luck!
The best thing for you to do is drink water. Yes Iam serious try it.
lotion. lancome (its french makeup works like magic)
Body lotion containin vitamin E is the best for skin...
Try exfoliating with a loofah or body scrub, which removes, the rough, outer layer and reveals softer, more radiant skin. This might also help to lighten it a bit. Secondly, moisturizing lotion such as Alveno or Olay works well, especially after exfoliating. Also, you can use a moisturizing body wash or soap, such as Dove. I have excema (a condition where my skin gets dry and cracked) and find that these tips really help. Drinking plenty of water is another excellent way to hydrate the skin.
You should check out my website to find all natural shampoo, hand soap, and etc. that will improve your skin.

How do I cook pasta in the microwave without making the texture weird and starchy?

Please don't tell me to just put it in the microwave. How can I cook it and AVOID the startchy-weirdness?How do I cook pasta in the microwave without making the texture weird and starchy?
those microwave pasta cookers usually are rated as junk or very poor when you check into them. they really are not worth the money.

In order for pasta to cook properly you need to use enough water to freely circulate and allow the starches to flow into then water. If you dont use enough, the starch just gums up the water. It makes the pasta gloopy and nasty.

The normally quoted ratio is a gallon of water per pound of pasta. Its not that some people cant get good results with those cookers, but its not a sure thing for everyone.

The best way is to season your pasta water with enough salt to make it taste vaguely like ocean water. The only time you have to season the pasta itself is while its cooking in the water. the salt will penetrate at that point. Bring the salted water to a full roiling boil and add your pasta. 1 gallon per 1 pound of pasta. cover the pot. this allows the water to come back to a roiling boil as soon as possible. Remove the lid and stir. stir until the strands or the noodles. are separated and flow freely. This way they wont be stuck together. Follow your instructions on the box or bag for cooking times.

Never. Never add oil to the cooking water. The oil will work against you in allowing the natural starches to help grab onto whatever pasta sauce you add to it later. It makes the sauce slip right off. You want that starch to grab onto and hold onto the sauce to make it a much nicer finished process.

If you cook in enough water, if you dont add oil to the water and if you cook and stir it properly then pasta wont be starchy and weird. How do I cook pasta in the microwave without making the texture weird and starchy?
You really shouldn't. Pasta should be boiled in water. I'm guessing that you don't have a hot plate or stove where you are. Microwave pasta is different from boxed pasta. You will always get the starchy-weirdness from it if you try.
Make sure you use enough water. If there isn't enough it allows the starch to stay on your pasta causing your problem. I live in a room and have no kitchen. I cook pasta in my microwave quite often and don't have any problem.
They sell microwave pasta cookers. Follow their instructions.

You can get a hot plate and cook it normally if you don't have a stove,

How can I cover an entire wall with the illusion of texture without much work? How to apply mirrors?

Once I saw one large piece of paneling or material tacked to a wall, which made the wall look brick(but there are other psuedo textures). It was not paint, wallpaper, or anything like that. It was something you could easily apply and just tack on all four corners. Where would I find something like this, and what is the name? I'm looking for something to cover an entire wall and add personality without a lot of work. Also, how can I cover an entire wall with a glass mirror without having to do a lot of drilling or adding multiple holes to the wall? How can I cover an entire wall with the illusion of texture without much work? How to apply mirrors?
Paneling is the easiest to do and there are many styles to choose from. There is even a ';textured'; panel that resembles regular walls and can be painted. Mirrors can be glued with a construction adhesive but if you live in a area prone to earthquakes, I don't recommend it. If you want to achieve the best look for your walls then you will have to put in some effort. How can I cover an entire wall with the illusion of texture without much work? How to apply mirrors?
Go to the wall paper dept. of your favorite store. They sell paintable wall paper, with many different textures such as stucco, swirls, plaster look etc. As for mirrors try two sided tape put a strip or sqare on each corner and also in the middle back of the mirror. It's not as much work to clean the wall if you decided to take down the mirror some day!
normally texture panelles like briks are sold in home depo. ask them theyll help you out
make a frame for the mirror and fasten IT to the wall. but a whole wall mirror/ they break, you know.

How do you make a cheesecake with a fluffy and light texture rather than a solid one?

For those familiar with Swiss pastries bakery in Ottawa, theirs has the the texture I am looking for. Anyone cheesecake experts/bakers have any idea? High quality ingredients only please nothing like cool whip :).How do you make a cheesecake with a fluffy and light texture rather than a solid one?
    Here's one for you.

    Fluffy Cheesecake

    Crust

    1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

22 finely crushed graham crackers (2 cups)

    Filling

    1 small box lemon gelatin

    1 cup boiling water

    1 cup granulated sugar

    3 ounces cream cheese

1 small can crushed pineapple, drained

1 large can evaporated milk (almost frozen)

    Juice of 1/2 lemon

Melt butter and add graham crackers. Press all but 1/2 cup of this mixture in a 13 x 9-inch dish.

Dissolve gelatin in water; cool. Cream sugar and cream cheese (a little of the cooled gelatin makes this easier). Whip canned milk, adding lemon juice; beat until very stiff. Mix gelatin and cream cheese mixture together. Add pineapple. Fold in whipped milk mixture. Pour into crumb-lined dish. Sprinkle remaining crumbs on top, adding 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts if desired. Chill.

All the fluffy recipes I've ever seen were no bake cheesecakes. Use real whipped cream instead of Cool Whip.

How do I make my Chicken Parmesan have the same texture as Olive Garden? Mine always turns out soggy.?

I normally pan fry my chicken with a bread crumb crust until it turns brown on both sides. Then I put the spaghetti sauce on top and simmer it for about 15 minutes. It tastes good but my crust is always soggy. I want my chicken in my chicken parmesan to have a more crunchy texture like Olive Garden's. How do I achieve this? How do I make my Chicken Parmesan have the same texture as Olive Garden? Mine always turns out soggy.?
The trick is to bake it or broil it quickly after you fry the chicken. You should not be simmering anything after the chicken is done. Once the chicken is fried, you should layer the suace and cheese on it, then quickly bake it in a HOT oven, just enough to melt and brown the cheese. I suggest a quick broil. This way it melts the cheese and gives it that brown cooked taste. In doing this I believe that should keep your chicken from getting soggy.

Enjoy !How do I make my Chicken Parmesan have the same texture as Olive Garden? Mine always turns out soggy.?
    OLIVE GARDEN-BLEH!

don't use alot of sauce, I use breadcrumbs and parm and make sure after you fry, you soak the oil off
After breading and pan frying (or baking, as I do), top with sauce and cheese and place under the broiler or back in a hot oven for a few minutes only to melt the cheese.
Don't put your spaghetti sauce on until you serve it.
I always fry the chicken to a crisp crust, then finish in the oven.

I heat the sauce separately - always.

I plate the pasta, then put the sauce on --- last the chicken goes on top.

Don't forget the grated parmigiano-reggianio! Mmmm!
I make mine by adding parmesan cheese to the bread crumbs, frying til brown, cover with a great marinara and mozzarella and then bake in the oven at 400 until the cheese is bubbly and beginning to brown. The chicken stays crunchy AND JUICY and you get the added perks of the browned cheese and sauce. The bad thing to this is the clean up.

  • How to change the texture of Cookies?

I made white chunk macadamia cookies looking at two recipes. One called for 2 eggs and the other just 1 egg. I used two. While the cookies tasted fine, but they were ';cake-like'; and I am assuming it was caused by the extra egg. I prefer a flat gooeyer cookie. I only made a few cookies to taste, then I froze the dough. At this point is there anything I can do to change the texture before I bake the whole batch? How to change the texture of Cookies?
You have already changed the texture by freezing the dough. The question is HOW has the texture changed.

You really can't add anything to the dough at this point, but you can try forming the cookies when the dough is barely thawed. The ice crystals will add some moisture and might change the texture in the direction you are looking for.How to change the texture of Cookies?
put your cookie sheet in your pre-heated oven first, then take it out when it is hot %26amp; drop your cookie dough onto the hot cookie sheet. bake at the same temp, take out about a minute or two earlier. just keep a close eye on the cookies while they are baking so you don't burn them. but, the cookies will flatten out when you bake them on a hot cookie sheet, so that's how you will eliminate the cake-like texture. (this is for drop method, for rolled method you would roll smaller balls or flatten slightly before baking, also using a hot cookie sheet) good luck.
If you already baked them I'm so sorry but it's to late. But if you haven't baked them yet.. then it's all about time and tempurture. Good Luck!
    yep...that extra egg did it

maybe since your froze them the texture wont be so cake like on your next batch

How do you Get texture in your hair when drying/washing it?

I have just had my hair washed and cut. Before during and after the cut, my hair had great texture. Is there a certain way to wash/dry your hair to get good texture before you apply product? How do you Get texture in your hair when drying/washing it?
Fresh hair cuts to the trick, split ends take away from texture in your hair. Notice when you get hair cuts is when your hair looks the best beside getting a good blow dry.How do you Get texture in your hair when drying/washing it?
well to get a good texture of haitr you must keep your ends clip keep conditioner in your hair in sit under the hair dryer for about 20mins. Try to keep as much color out as possilbe
The absolute best is a product called Texture Dirt from FX Special Effects. You can get it at any Walgreens. You'll love it!
Your best bet is to go to your hairstylist and ask what products they used in your hair, and buy them. Most of the time they use a high end shampoo and conditioner, a spray on conditioner, and then any other products to help style your hair the way you want. Usually it's the spray in conditioner that does it. The best person to ask is most certainly your hairstylist. They are by far the most knowledgeable when it comes to your hair.

Sounds like he really didnt want the work, heheh

Your biggest hassle is going to be getting the old popcorn texture off... since youve already got plastic down, I'd suggest you go ahead and do it yourself.

I use sharp floor scrapers, or taping knives, to scrape off old popcorn texture. Wear safety glasses, and respirators....it will get dirty/dusty in there, hehehe. Most old popcorn textures use cellulose (paper), or polystyrene to make the 'popcorn'....but some few also had some fiberglass in them...which can make you itch. If you notice you are beginning to itch quite a bit, then I'd suggest wearing work gloves, and long sleeves, or there is a hand cream that forms an 'invisible' shield on your skin. If the fiberglass makes you itch (bothers some people more than others) wash with COLD water. This helps close the skin pores, keeping the fiberglass from getting in any deeper, hehehe.

Once you have the popcorn scraped off, you may need to do a little sanding, or drywall patch (i.e., gouge marks from the scrapers, hehe).

An orange peel texture can be applied using a hopper gun, and air compressor. You can rent both, if you dont own them. Homex makes a nice little kit too.... its only a plastic spray gun, and uses a half gallon jug as the 'hopper', but for a small job like this, it would work just fine. If you are really careful about cleaning out the gun afterwards, you can use it several times yet. I like to make a couple of practice shots on some scrap plastic draped over a piece of plywood, or sheetrock, before starting on the ceiling, just to get the 'swing' of it.

Or you may get a more reasonable estimate, if all you need done is the orange peel, hehehe.

I'd be asking for other estimates for certain, as it sounds like that particular fellow priced himself too high.

    Have Fun

wording mixed, rusty is a brownish orange term, texture is the bumpy surface, when you paint the surface with acrylics, the color does fade slightly, and also the glossy appearance goes dull, if these are craft acrylics, there are clear shellac coats you can apply over colour, possibly a spray to coat and protect,

How to get a texture effect when painting a wall and ceiling. Please help.?

I would love that granular sort of textured look for the walls that I am painting.

Does sombody know how to go about accomplishing it.

At the paint shop they say that the walls have to be pre-textured rendered. But I think that this is not right, that it may be possible to get the look by way of special painting rolls, or thikeners and additives to the paint.

I am at a lost. Any help will be much appreciatedHow to get a texture effect when painting a wall and ceiling. Please help.?
The paint store told you correctly, the texture needs to go on the wall before you paint.

Most wall and ceiling texture is applied with a spray gun... which can get messy, hehehe. If youve never used one, it would probably be best to hire it done. If you're up for the challenge, you can rent a hopper gun from a local tool rental store. The directions on how to mix the texture up are on the bags. Cover everything with plastic, and wear safety glasses and a respirator... at least spray with your mouth closed, lol. (or you'll get some of the texture in between your teeth, lol...wont hurt you, but it doesnt taste good, lol)

There are a lot of variables that will affect the texture... how wet you mix it, how thick, how fast (or slow) you spray it, the nozzle setting, etc... then there are those that are known as ';knockdown'; texture... with these you take a wide putty or taping knife (12'; or so), and sweep the wall with it, dragging it in the same downward motion each time.

After youve achieved the texture you want... you need to put a coat of primer on it. This will help keep the paint from becoming blotchy and uneven.

Good LuckHow to get a texture effect when painting a wall and ceiling. Please help.?
you can buy a textured roller but it wouldnt have the circular swirls
You can buy texturing compound. Hell, it can come in a spray bottle. It can be difficult to accomplish and have it look good though.

The wall is drywall. Oil based paint. Will the texture adhere to unprepped surface? How do I apply texture to a wall painted w/oil-based paint-does it have to be prepped?
You have a big problem. Texturing over oil-based paint attracts fire ants and termites. I'd recommend covering the wall with carpet samples using superglue. Instant texture and quite unique! How do I apply texture to a wall painted w/oil-based paint-does it have to be prepped?
Make sure the wall is clean, free of dust or grease and you should be ok.
I used to work at Home Depot. Yes you can apply texture to a wall that is painted via oil-based paint. There are a couple steps you want to do:

    1. Make sure the paint is well adhered. Scrape off/sand any loose or flaking paint. If the paint isn't holding onto the wall, the texture won't be able to either.

    2. ';Scuff sand'; the wall. This does not mean you need to sand every inch or sand much off. The idea here is to ruff up the surface of the paint so the texture can physically bond to the wall.

    3. Clean the wall with TSP. You can find this in any home improvement/hardware store. This will remove all dirt and grease from the walls.

    4. After the above steps, you should be able to apply wall texture to the wall per the directions on the container.

    Good luck!
Go to Home Depot and ask them. They say 'You can do it, and they can help';.
No problem...... Clean, dry, and Prime. Ask where you buy the texture paint if you should use oil base primer or latex for the brand you are using. It will say on the can instructions also.

How to apply knockdown texture on a small repair?

I just patched a small (4x4) area of drywall, skimmed and ready for texture. I bought one of those ridiculous texture in a bottle products and it didn't work. I have a medium/heavy knockdown texture currently. I Reilly don't want to bring in my compressor and hopper to do this small job. Does anyone have any suggestions or techniques? Just so you know, I have tried the following: Tamco brush (doesn't ';flick'; well), flicking on wall with my fingers didn't work! How to apply knockdown texture on a small repair?
There's a little plastic texture gun put out by Homax that uses a hand pump and a little mini-hopper to ';squirt'; the texture onto the wall.

The ones with the blue tips are for ceilings, and the red-tipped ones are for walls.

You can even adjust it from light to heavy.

And they're only about 15-20 bucks.

    Those cans are worthless really.

They don't offer any kind of control.

Using a slightly damp sponge after you knock it down when the texture is just about dry also helps to blend it into the existing texture.

How to apply knockdown texture on a small repair?
The stuff in the cans does work but you need to make sure you get the right one, get the one for heavy texture hold it away at least 12in and make sure you spray it on a sample piece of cardboard first to get the spray you want, let it set up for 10 to 15min before running the broad knife gently over the surface to get the knock down look. I've used it many times in the past but sometimes the cans you buy are defective and they don't work right for some reason, so you may have just got a bad can. There is a little red dial on the nozzle so you can adjust the spray also.
you can buy a texture roller(woven nylon loops ) from your local home center or sherwin williams should have it ,9 roller sleeve is standard but you can cut it with a saw to 4 inch (to fit 4 inch handle)....First add water to your spackle and mix well,...the mix should be like thick pancake batter,....scoop the mix into a rolling pan.....,roll mud onto roller sleeve, then roll on to desired thickness, roll from the middle of new area toward the existing areas this point it will look like pointed stipple.....once you get the stipple effect, let it dry a few minutes(very important to let mud set up before knockdown) then knockdown with a straight edge,(a wallpaper smoother or a 6 inch spackle knife will work fine) ...hold straightedge at inward angle and go over use the crosshatch method////////\\\\\\\\\(in all directions) area pressing ever so lightly ,the desired pattern will be a combination of the stippling and knockdown technique you apply, you can practice on scrap drywall and until you paint spackle can cleaned away completely with water so no worries have fun and good luck!
I always use Homax or Spraytex orange peel spray and have good results. You most likely will never get an exact match in the texture but you can get it close. Get can and practice on a piece of drywall in your garage until you get a pattern that is acceptable.
i have just the thing a tube of caulk and ur finger

How to make vanilla ice cream with fine and smooth texture?

I like ice cream. I wanted to know how to make it. Can some one send me the best recipe. How to make vanilla ice cream with fine and smooth texture?
The best way to make fine smooth ice cream is with an ice cream maker - you don't need one - but it sure makes it easier!

Here's my favorite vanilla ice cream recipe...

    1 cup milk

    1/2 cup granulated sugar

    2 cups heavy whipping cream

    1 1/2 - 2 tsp vanilla extract

After you鈥檝e mixed the ingredients together, pour this mixture in your ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's directions.

You can spice up this recipe by adding fun mix-ins like crumbled Oreos for Cookies and Cream or Chocolate Chips and Cookie Dough Balls for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.

This is the quick version of ice cream making. You can also make ice cream without an ice cream maker! If you want a more detailed description or a different recipe - you can check out

You should be able to find all the help you need!

Adding a banana or gelatin to the ingredients before you freeze it, can help make the ice cream more smooth!

I hope you make the smoothest ice cream ever! How to make vanilla ice cream with fine and smooth texture?
On the counter in a pan pour in 1 qt half and half and 2 cups whole milk and 4 eggs, 2 teaspoons of Vanilla, 1 cup Sugar - beat til smooth and cook on medium heat til mixture is hot. Pour into shallow pan and freeze in freezer or use Ice Cream or Yogurt freezer.. either hand crank or electric.

Don't fill shallow pan too full - it is easy to spill. I usually set pan in bottom of freezer and then pour it in there. :)
Fine and smooth texture? Make liquid hydrogen coffee icecream. its the best!

Best way to give texture to previously wallpapered walls?

I have torn down ugly wallpaper from my kitchen, and I want to paint the drywall to match the family room. There's not much wall space; behind the fridge, above large windows, around the door, above the cabinetry. What's the easiest/least messy way to give some orange peel like texture to these areas before we paint? Also, will the drywall be subject to absorbing too much water in this process? I don't want to re-paper.Best way to give texture to previously wallpapered walls?
You can buy orange peel at your home center in an aerosol can. It's super easy to use. Spray it on. Let it dry. Paint. Bam your done.Best way to give texture to previously wallpapered walls?
No matter what you decide to do prime the drywall with 2 coats of water-based kilz-it first. They sell it in aerosol cans at home depot.

  • What happens to the texture of a cake if one bakes it with Crisco?

I've never used shortening to bake cake- only butter. Can someone tell me what happens to the TEXTURE and density of the cake if you use it in place of some or all of the butter? What happens to the texture of a cake if one bakes it with Crisco?
it will be fine and Crisco does not burn faster.

It has a much higher smoke point than butter but that fact has nothing to do with baking a cake. Do not change any temperature. Simply use Crisco, measure for measure like butter. What happens to the texture of a cake if one bakes it with Crisco?
Here is the deal doll. Crisco is GREAT for cookies and all, but cakes I tend to not like to work with it. Though it does work, I would rather tough it out and use my creamy butter recipe. Crisco in my mind adds a fake buttery taste BLEH! you want your cakes to be light fluffy and MELT in your mouth.

Call me insane but here is what I do.

For every stick of butter (real is the best but if you prefer to be healthy margarine works too) you do a cup of sugar so this can work for almost any cake recipe. You first start by making sure you butter is at room temp. then you mix it up with a hand mixer.. not by hand but a hand mixer (you will ge GREAT arms) it is also easier if you cut your butter up rather than well.. not. once it is at a ';spreadable'; stage you then add your butter tablespoon by tablespoon. I usually do 3 then mix for a few seconds 3 mix, 3 mix.. etc. then you add your eggs in 1 min increments. this is very tedious but SO SO SO SO! worth it..

    HOPE THIS HELPS!

P.S. sift your dry ingredients :)
Crisco is just fine. Before oil was used, everyone used Crisco. The cake will be just fine and tasty.
honeslty is just gets more soft and moist... and you have to set the oven in lower heat since the crisco burns faster

Ugly concrete ceiling with texture, how can I make it look smooth like drywall?

We live in a condo with a concrete ceiling and I am looking for ideas on how to make it look smooth like drywall, without the expense and without lowering the ceiling height. Does anyone know of an economical and/or time saving way to fix this?Ugly concrete ceiling with texture, how can I make it look smooth like drywall?
The best thing I can think of is to go to a home improvement store and get sheets of luan to cover the ceiling with. It is a light weight material that will stick to the ceiling using some drylock. Depending on how big the ceiling is, it should not cost you too much.Ugly concrete ceiling with texture, how can I make it look smooth like drywall?
sticking luan wood to the ceiling is lunacy.Sticking any kind of sheeting to the concrete ceiling is moronic.

Whar you need to do is put a smooth plaster surface on the ceiling,,,a very thin one.

First insure that the surface of the ceiling is stabile and can accept plaster. The roughness of the ceiling now is a plus--it will give good adhesion to the plaster.

    You get Sheetrock Lightweight All Purose Joint Compound and put it on with a wide ';knife';

When it dries you can easily sand out any rough spots.

Can I freeze navy bean soup without ruining the texture?

I made a soup with navy beans, ham, carrots, onions, and celery (yummy!) but the recipe made too much. If I freeze it, will it get yucky and mushy? Do you have any tips for successful reheating? Can I freeze navy bean soup without ruining the texture?
Yep! Beans freeze very well. As for reheating, I would just defrost overnight in the refrigerator. I find microwaving is just so uneven. But yes, your bean soup should be just fine. Just don't leave it longer than 3 months, freezer burn can be nasty! Can I freeze navy bean soup without ruining the texture?
thank you so much for the useful advice.Denise Report Abuse

It should freeze well as long as there are no potatoes or pasta in it. The freezing won't harm the texture but reheating it for too long could. Let it thaw completely, then heat it just until it's hot.

    Best of luck.

How do I texture a wall before I paint it?

I have no knowledge about putting texture on a wall before you paint. I am painting a room this weekend and wanted to put some texture on. Can someone help me? How do I do it? What's a quick, easy, and good looking texture I can do?How do I texture a wall before I paint it?
I would give the illusion of texture with a faux technique like color washing or sponging, use two very similar colors, just a shade apart and paint the darker color on first with a roller, now slightly water the lighter color down in a separate container (if you are using water-based) and get a wide brush and paint over the base color using a large X pattern, you will develop a rythm, or use a stroke you like best, arches work well too. Just leave a hint of the base color exposed and it will look like you have a textured wall. If you use a sponge do the same as above except usng a sea sponge and dab a little in the paint (too much will run and drip) and roll the sponge often for a random pattern. I personally like using drywall mud and a trowel and going over the entire wall leaving subtle trowel marks but this is time consuming and you have to wait for the mud to dry before you can paint it. The trouble with adding texture to paint is it's messy and never looks uniform. Texture should really only be applied by a person with the right equipment. Another nice option is the Ralph Lauren suede or River Rock, they both have gritty texture in them and come with instructions. I have done the suede in a clients house and it came out gorgeous! Tinted venetian plaster also looks great and is applied with a trowel, I did that in another clients house and it's pretty dramatic and awesome but takes a long time and a couple layers. They usually only show a few color options but they will mix in pretty much any color you want, you just have to ask for them. Hope this helps! How do I texture a wall before I paint it?
you can rent a gun and buy the texture stuff and blow it onto the walls. it is messy so lots of tape and plastic drop cloths to go with it are a good idea. if you want the normally used texture, that is the way to go.

There are other kinds of texture, some done in the paint itself. you can go over the walls, a small area at at time with joint compound, then use a comb, a sponge or various other implements to create unique textures. Just all depends on what you want to do. One guy i knew put simple clay type cat litter in paint and stuck it to the walls. great for rental properties, the coarse texture like sand paper this created meant people stayed the heck away from the walls. you can also put sand in the paint, use masking tape on the walls before you paint to create subtle designs...use your imagination, it's only walls, not rocket surgery.
There are a few patterns here if you are using artex or similar-

    http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/textur鈥?/a>
You can buy rollers that will add texture. Thats always an option.
you have to purchase a texture roller and some some 90 minute set joint compound. Mix per manufacturers instructions, use paint roller to apply to wall surface... if it is too bumpy you can knock down with a ';taping'; knife or other trowel.....

you can also apply to wall with masonary trowel to create a stucco effect or with a stiff, wide brush utilizing random strokes
In the paint department of Lowes %26amp; Home Depot along with many paint stores, they have containers of various styles of plasters and such you can apply to your wall. They have samples of what they will look like there. They often have books there to help you out and possibly give you more ideas than what they sell there. You can generally get plasters online too if you get an idea from a book or online [DIYNet.com for example.] Some textures can be a little difficult to get used to so I would suggest getting a board or something to practice on a bit. And you CAN wash them once you paint them, just like any other wall.

The faking texture with paint is a great idea too though. Again the paint department or a specialty store along with online sources will have a wealth of ideas and help on what to buy and how to do it. And again, practice a bit first!
You can buy Texture in a can to spray on the walls prior to your painting. You can add texture to your paint. You can use plaster for several textures. There are rollers you can buy that have texture on them when you use them. You could paint your wall with a bottom coat of paint, then with a darker or complementary color you could randomly paint (just pressing down) with a sea sponge. You could paint the base color, then I used a white to plastic bag spread on a wall. There's stensils, there all sorts of painting techniques. What one of my best recommendations is to go to Home Depot or Lowes and they can tell you many more paint texture ideas.
there are numerous ways.... head to home depot for a bunch of different painting techniques - from adding a plaster type layer, to rollers, to paint with ';texture'; in it.... you can also buy wall papers that are made with various textures and then painted over.

me, i'm rather lazy and did mine this way.... dark colors worked best but.... flat enamel behr paint - primary coats. then i took the exact same color but in a semi gloss and did my ';pattern'; over it. what's fun is people's reaction when the light hits it! in the evening when it's dark you can't really see the ';pattern';. i used this wooly type rectangular thing from HD (used for patterns and stuff) and did that.... i like it and msot people seem to as well and best of all - it was REALLY easy.
It depends on the texture you desire. Go to a paint store. They have texture paints for ceilings....it will work on walls too.
I wouldn't advise you to texturize your walls- it catches a lot of dust, you can't wash it, and any little bump can damage it. If you get tired of it for these or other reasons, it is almost impossible to remove. Try a paint technique such as rag paint or feather paint to give your walls the appearance of texture without all of the drawbacks. Your local library should have books to give you detailed instructions. The paint won't catch dust, won't be easily damaged (and if you do scuff or nick the paint, it is easy to touch up), can be washed if they get dirty, and if you get tired of it you can easily and inexpensively change it. Good luck.
where you at? I'm in Tampa, if you're close by, I'll do it for free. I'm a drywaller in need of work am I'm bored out of my mind. I've got the texture and the gun/sprayer to do it. It'd take maybe 1/2 hour for a 10X10 section at the most no more than 2 hours for a big room. Call me @ 8-1-3 -3-8-5 -0-5-0-8. I do lots of home improvement type work from drywall to electrical to tile to plumbing. Call me for anything you need. Or just e-mail me at this account.

PS I can do all of the techniques listed by other posters, and for you it's free, I'm bored as ****! I just want to run some mud to get out of the house!.
usually you spray the texture. you use the same mud that u float drywall with but its not really a do it your self if u want it to look good.you can roll it on if you want just ask for a special roller.
You can have the texture material you are using tinted to what color you want. Get a good real sponge, and dab it on, or you can use a trawl or a block of 2x4. Dab it on, swirl it, pull it, just try a little of every thing, see what you like. Just remember if it is to high it's going to have sharp points sticking out, and it is hard to keep clean.

aloe, definately, they put aloe in everything now a days like in lotion, nail products, hair products, cosmetic stuff.Aloe is pretty expensive though if you buy it as the actual plant, but try buying those stuff that i listed up there.
try blending the egg white and honey well and then apply on the face. This makes your skin smooth and helps to reduce wrinkles
Take sugar and baby oil or sugar and honey or sugar and water and make it into a paste and leave it on your skin for 1 minute then take it off. I didn't this morning and my face and hands are still soft.
To improve the texture is put lotion on your skin everday and after something that was hard work put more lotion on and buy stuff that was naturally made for skin.

    Hope it helps!
Its all about maintenance. Cleanse your skin well but don't use abrasive products or sponges. Do exfoliate all over with a sugar %26amp; water paste or gentle product made for skin. Moisturize all over daily and/or whenever your skid feels or looks dry. Vaseline or products with natural plant oils are best for dry skin. They nourish and moisturize fast and well. Stay out of the sun and use sunblock when possible. In short, care for your skin and give it the attention it needs.

  • What is the best way to remove/cover swirl texture from a ceiling?

I just moved into a place with swirled plaster ceilings...they are pretty out dated and I would like to either remove the swirl or cover the swirl texture. Eventually the exposed or covered ceiling will be decorated with ';knockdown';. Can anyone sort of walk me through the complete process or direct me to a good resource. I've found a lot of info for removing popcorn, but not swirl.

Thanks,What is the best way to remove/cover swirl texture from a ceiling?
It depends on whether it's been painted or not. If it hasn't, wet and scrape. If it has, the best thing to do is knock the high spots down with a screen sander. Prime the surface with a coating that will bind to both your old surface and the new surface. Then go over top with a skim coat of plaster or, in your case, knock-down.

How to create texture on a canvas with gesso?

I would like to use a thin cloth over the gesso so that the texture has more depth. Would the cloth stay in place if I use enough gesso? How to create texture on a canvas with gesso?
Certainly. Sand, carboard, thin strips of wood, paper, saw dust and other such material can be added as well. Weight being the only real concern. In fact there was available at one time and maybe still is Gesso that had various materials, sand, very tiny glass pellets added for texture that was being sold.. There is also modeling paste, which I think is just a thicker form of gesso, that can be used to create an ';impasto'; effect before applying paint. Now doing what you plan to do will require that you allow the materials to dry sufficiently to stay in place. Probably working on your canvas while it is laying flat and not propped up. LOL.Do know that it will be a mess to work with. I use to attach string to the sides of the stretcher bars in straight lines across some canvases before applying layers of gesso. To be ripped out later once the gesso had dried. This made for some straight lines or rather shallow channels in the gesso purely for texture as a part of the design. Fresh gesso will be a bit runny and may want to spread somewhat on it's own, as any liquid might. Leaving an amount of gesso exposed to the air will thicken it up,but has to be paid attention to so that it doesn't dry out too much. Artist will use gesso and even acrylic paint as an adhesive when doing mix-media collages..

As a side note I have heard that acrylic paint came about originally ,decades ago, in an attempt to develop a glue. However the problem was that it didn't set-up or dry fast enough to be of practical use as a glue. So,I guess, going with the idea that when given sour lemons, make lemonade probably took hold and it became a new type of waterbased paint instead. Eventually leading to latex paints as well.

How to add texture to a repaired wall?

I just patched the wall and still need to paint how can I add texture to make it look like the rest of the wall? How to add texture to a repaired wall?
Is it like rough, bumpy texture? I don't know what kind of texture but if it's the rough , bumpy kind you can use a brush and smoosh just the bristles up against the wet paint. They have special brushes for those too but that is more expensive. If it's not bumpy and so forth you can use a sponge for some texture. How to add texture to a repaired wall?
use your drywall mud and either a sponge or an old carbrush, try it on a extra piece of drywall first to make sure you like the texture first
there are many types of texture, if it is a splatter or knock-down, it is usually ';blown'; with a compressor and hopper (they can be rented). then there is stomped; and stomped knocked-down--the knock down is done by skimming a wide blade over the top of the texture after it has set up a while, but not dried completely. then there is drag, Spanish drag, skip-trowel, and about 1,000 others.

without seeing it i cannot tell you how to do it, your best bet would be to ask someone at your paint store how to match it, describe it to them or take a Polaroid or digital shot of it and show them a picture...they can tell you what it is called and how to match it.
    use a thick nap roller
depending on the area u patched. one trick is to add the texture to your paint and put on spot you repaired using a roller. dont be shy with the texture and dont over roll or it will come off and stick to your roller. let it dry and visiually inspect to see if it blended in, if not apply a second coat. dont worry about the paint because new sheetrock and repairs need 2 coats of paint. if u are happy then repaint the whole wall or room. most harware stores have texture. only mix enough in paint to cover your repair. dont waste your paint.
There is a product that comes in a spray can for that purpose..

It dries with a texture that blends in with the surrounding paint.

Ca'nt remember name, might have seen it in home ctr.

    Already finished painting .

Wish I had seen it sooner...next time.

How much should it cost to mud/tape, and texture about 1500 sq feet?

There are 2 rooms totalling about 500 sq.ft. that the ceilings need to be mud, taped, and textured. Then there is about 500 sq ft. of wall that needs the same, and the other 700 sq feet, have already been mud/taped and textured, but I'd like new texture (heavy knock down) on top of this. We have 1 estimate but would like another to know if I've been quoted a good price or not. The corners need the metal stripping around them as do the windows. Thanks for your time. How much should it cost to mud/tape, and texture about 1500 sq feet?
According to my bf who is in the business, $1 per sq foot; about $1500. He said to tell you he's available. How much should it cost to mud/tape, and texture about 1500 sq feet?
    $250-500

Bag of mud $30 / bag

But for me to do it... its gonna cost a lot!
the magic question on tapping, all depends on if it was hung right first, like no nails sticking out and not allot of unnecessary joints, i always looked at the whole job and it depends on the area you live in but 45 cents plus material for a heavy knock down would be a starting point. good luck

What is the best roller to use for applying texture paint to walls?

I was told to use a 3/8'; nap roller but I am finding that the paint (which is very thick) is not going on evenly. It is leaving bare spots. I am using a 9 inch roller but maybe a shorter roller would be better. Your thoughts? What is the best roller to use for applying texture paint to walls?
Use a thicker nap roller, like 3/4'; or 1';. The paint will go on heavy where ever you start the roller so apply it thick about 1 rollers lenght away and work the paint back towards your last roll. You will have to work the paint abit with the roller to get it even. Just take your time and it will turn out fine. What is the best roller to use for applying texture paint to walls?
SLIGHTLY ROUGH - medium nap (3/8'; to 1/2';); longer fibers push the paint into rough surfaces without causing ';orange peel.'; Use on sand finish plaster, texture plaster, acoustical tile, poured concrete, rough wood and shakes.
Go to a paint store and buy a sheep skin roller. It's the best thing I've ever used PLUS it's reusable... really. It costs more but the paint washes right out unlike other rollers. Just get it slightly damp, paint your wall and wash it out with cold water. Great for textured walls.

How to I texture the walls in my house?

What do I use to add texture to my walls. I am living in a very old house (temp... for about 3 years while building a new one) and the walls look horrible. The house was not made to look pretty that is for sure. You can see every seem of each piece of drywall plus its just so old there are imperfections everywhere. Some of the rooms I think I can just use a painting technique to make it look textured but a couple of the rooms I really need to add something on top of the drywall before painting. Any Ideas on what I would use?How to I texture the walls in my house?
best thing to do first is cover plasterboard joints over or cracks will appear ..get some drywall tape a bucket and some pva adhesive..mix up pva at 3part water to 1 pva then one at a time measure tape and cut to size soak in bucket for bout 3 mins then cover joint ..do this over any screw holes aswell once thats all prepped and dry get some artex obviously a large bag and mix accordin to instructions paint on as thick as needed ull find as brush loads up it becomes better to put on then depending wot finish u want either get a bark effect roller or stipple brush and go over artexuse a 1 inch brush to make a boarder round edges to make it look more professional leave to dry then paint to suit ur taste.should look much better after that! good luck hope that helps..and btw drywall doesnt need to b sealed with pva mix only existing plaster or concrete wallsHow to I texture the walls in my house?
Get a 5 gallon bucket of joint compound and round brush soak the brush to soften the bristles and you may have to remove some of the bristles (not required). load the brush with compound and stab at the walls. after it sets up a bit you can trowel it down with an 8 or 12 inch drywall knife. to knock off the sharp edges.
Paint stores and some Home Centers sell texture paint. It is very thick and you can add the texture you desire. Great stuff for covering imperfections in the drywall.

How do you texture a ceiling?

The style I'm most interested in is what I think is called 'knock down'. It looks like large splatters that have been flattened or scraped somehow. There must be some tricks. I have the texture gun. I'd sure like to get it right the first time. How do you texture a ceiling?
buy whats called a stomp brush. water down slightly some joint compound, stomp on ceiling and drag across with a drywall knife. its called stomp and drag. go to any sherwin williams store and they should be able to lead you in the right direction. im a painting contractor, do it all the time. good luck. tdHow do you texture a ceiling?
Apply the texture by gun/roller/brush. The amount you apply is important. Let it dry 12-24 hours and hit it with a pole sander to take off the tops. It will make painting and cleaning easier.
Texture roller on a long pole.

    That's how I did it.
If you have an air compressor capable of 35-40psi, you can buy a spray gun for $30.00. It's called a Homax spray texture gun. They also have a spray can version, although I have never tried it.

I want to do knockdown texture in my boys room what is the best and easiest way to get the knockdown look. I and to have it look like a pro's worlk. Any advice would be great. What is the best way to do knockdown texture?
First trowel drywall mud on the area to be textured (work in fairly small areas). Then press the flat of the trowel into the wet mud and pull it directly away. That will leave the mud with a series of peaks. Continue on and do the whole work area. After the mud has dried a bit (you will have to trial and error this because it will be different with every different relative humidity) trowel the peaks off. That will leave the base of the peaks as your ';knock down'; texture. What is the best way to do knockdown texture?

How van you paint staraight lines when the texture of the walls is rough?

I'm painting my house and the corners where there are two colors together the line are nor straight.. Does not look very good Help. How van you paint staraight lines when the texture of the walls is rough?
I don't know exactly how rough the walls are but the first poster is right- painter's tape if they are only moderately rough. There is really no way to make totally straight lines if the walls are spackled...unless you sand them first...How van you paint staraight lines when the texture of the walls is rough?
Paint the lighter color on first, going around the corner. Using a very small brush, follow a pencil line mark; the darker color will be put on last. If you still have crooked spots, do touch up using whichever paint color will correct the problem; again, use a small brush and go slow... the final brush could even be a small artist's paint brush, not a brush meant for walls - it's the best way to do fine details like you need.
Use painters tape to make straight lines.

How can I flavor chocolate without changing its texture?

I bought flavored oils, but they make the chocolate kind of mushy. I'm looking to make little solid raspberry flavored chocolates for our restaurant. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.How can I flavor chocolate without changing its texture?
The process that gives chocolate it's texture is 'tempering'.

This is where the chocolate is heated above 51 degree C, then cooled to around 23 degree then heated to around 28 degree C. It really depends on the type of chocolate.

When doing this by hand the chocolate is folded on a marble slab but it takes many years to train people.

If you don't temper properly you will end up with a mixture of crystals (yes, solid chocolate is crystalline) and a soft, dull, and fudgey texture. Not nice (also may bloom - white deposit on surface of chocolate).

Finally make sure you add oil based flavours. Mix water with melted chocolate and you will end up with a solid mess that will probably mean throwing the pan away.

I would bother - get into the shops and find a flavoured chocolate you like. How can I flavor chocolate without changing its texture?
I think you need the chocolate to cool a little before adding the flavored oils to it.
Use a concentrated flavoring like vanilla. Don't just throw in raw ingredients. Have you tried making truffles out of ganache, chocolate mixed with whipping cream and rolled in nuts or cocoa.

How do you give a poster a rough texture to give it a professional look for framing?

I saw some posters at Blockbuster, some ordinary posters of popular movies and scenes and it seems like clear sand was plastered over the poster to give it a rough professional look. They then had an ordinary wooden frame around the poster and slapped a $40 price tag on it. Now I know there's an easy way of making something of your own like this MUCH cheaper and with a picture you want. Does anyone know the technique? How do you give a poster a rough texture to give it a professional look for framing?
$40 for a framed poster is ultra-cheap, considering the sizes of most posters, the cost of the materials, and the fact that the posters themselves aren't free. Try buying a poster and framing it yourself, and you'll see what I mean.

I believe the clear granules you're talking about are called ';diamond dust';, or a similar name, and they're available in craft stores. You cover a surface with glue and sprinkle the diamond dust on just like glitter (but unlike glitter, you'd be able to see the image underneath through the granules). I don't believe the ultimate effect could fool anyone with any art education or experience into thinking it's a ';real painting'; (I am a professional painter), but to each his own, I guess. How do you give a poster a rough texture to give it a professional look for framing?
    I am puzzled.

    How does adding texture make a poster more ';professional looking?';
Head to your nearest craft store and ask for a spray adhesive and then a clear granulated sand.. I cant think of the proper name.. And def practice on something else before you try it:)

How does texture coating look on exterior wood siding?

We have a home with some stucco walls and some conventional exterior wood siding. Will texture coating look good on wood siding, or does it look like some sort of strange stucco/wood hybrid without clean lines? Thanks! How does texture coating look on exterior wood siding?
Is the siding a large part of the exterior or a smaller accent part to the house? Ask someone who does siding and home exteriors what they think. Look on the web at homes for sale and see if there is a home with this exterior on it so you have an idea what it will look like. Some of the contractors have computer programs where they can give you a virtual look at what the house may look like. They may charge for the service but it's cheaper than redoing the wall. How does texture coating look on exterior wood siding?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

However a texture coating on wood will look like a missmatch.

Sand the wood siding and put a high quality urethane or varnish coating on.

Why is my sponge cake dry in texture?

What are the secrets to making the perfect sponge cake? Why is my sponge cake dry in texture?
first, all of your ingredients should be room temperature before you mix them.. second cooking time and heat temperature, not all ovens are created equal... if you like baking, it would be wise to invest in a oven thermometer..

commonly if the cake is dry in texture it's because it's overcooked. Why is my sponge cake dry in texture?
OK, its either not got enough liquid...or you overcooked it...or its evil and decided to be individual...or its been beaten too much...eat it anyway, cake =yummy-o, chummy-o!!

How to get a soft and fluffy texture with homeade bread?

I've been making my own bread lately, but the texture isn't soft and fluffy like store bought bread. Should I knead the dough longer? How to get a soft and fluffy texture with homeade bread?
Being a former chef former Canada a softer loaf is generaly one with or made with milk, it adds a softer texture, fluffiness like store bought bread can be achieved by slow rising of the dough, some professional bakerys make the dough and then raise it slowly in the frig. They do it and let it rest overnight.

The fat to adds texture, most people my use oil, shortening or nothing, but the dough needs some fat to help tenderise the dough, for a real treat warm the milk to blood temparture, add soft butter, sugar and the yeast let it stand to rise, the mix your dough, kneading often if done to much or even in breadmakers can make the dough heavy or tough, a gentle kneading is all you are require to do.

Once you have brought the dough to room temp, and then formed it, into loaves or rolls, let it rise again to a double of it original size, then brush a bit of water on to create a crust, the bake it faster, 400 D,timing depends on the size of the product, this is done so it pushes the dough and seals in the moisture and keeps the dough soft and fluffy.

Good luck this has always worked for me, professionally trained and I worked in Hotels, Restaurants, Resorts and catering operations, all over Canada and Jamaica over a 20 year career. How to get a soft and fluffy texture with homeade bread?
No don't knead it longer, adding too much flour will make it tough. Just knead till the dough is smooth and elastic. The softer the dough the softer the bread. Having good yeast is also important, make sure your yeast is fresh and not old. That way you get maximum volume for your bread.

    Good luck.
A quick suggestion for when it comes out of the oven!

Brush olive oil all over the bread. As long as you keep it sealed, it keeps it soft for a week!

Another thing I do to keep it super soft is to take it out of the pan immediately after baking and put it in a large ziplock bag. This softens the bread as it cools due to the consensation!
    hi there,

after you knead it, let the dough rest til doubled the size, knead it again shape it and let rise til dooubled, than bake it, it should work like that, it come out light and fluffy, good luck and enjoy

  • What texture a cake needs to be when decorating?

I am making a lady bug cake for my niece. The base cake will be pre-made, but the lady bug and any decorations I will be doing. The for the lady bug is store bought (Duncan Hines). I want to make the body out of a cake back in a bowl so it is round. Is there a specific density the cake needs to be? Is there something I need to do/ not do to make sure the cake isn't difficult to frost? What texture a cake needs to be when decorating?
Using a cake mix cake would be fine. Make sure that you cake is cooled, at least four hours or overnight. Lightly brush any loose crumbs from the cake.

You will achieve a more professional look and finish on your cake if you apply the frosting in two coats. First place about one-third of the remaining frosting in a small bowl and thin the consistency with a small amount of milk. Spread in a thin layer over the entire cake as a base coat to seal in any remaining crumbs and smooth the surface. Let the base coat dry for about 15 minutes.

Spread the sides of the cake with a thicker, finishing layer of frosting, working from the top toward the bottom as you rotate the cake. Wipe the spatula with paper towels before dipping it back into the bowl of frosting, and keep it well coated with frosting so it doesn't pick up any crumbs.

To frost the cake top, spoon a mound of frosting in the center and spread it outward to all edges. Hold a narrow metal spatula under hot running water, shake off the excess water and use the damp spatula to quickly smooth a section of frosting with long strokes, moving in one direction. Repeat until the frosting is smooth on the cake top and sides. What texture a cake needs to be when decorating?
In the past when I decorated cakes, I always cooked Duncan Hines cakes at 325 rather than the 350 called for. Do not over mix the cake or you will have air pockets. Make sure the cake has cooled completely before icing. Giving the possible difficulty of frosting the lady bug back smooth, you may want to consider using a star tip to cover the back with stars. You also may lightly brush cake after it has cooled with a sugar water mixture to glue crumbs in place. The density of the cake mix is fine. Cake mixes are frequently used for decorated cakes.
I did a similar project once but it was a turtle, not a ladybug. I baked it in a bowl the same way. I just used a regular box of cake mix along with store bought frosting. It came out perfectly. You don't need to change the cake for this project. good luck!

How do you do a knockdown ceiling texture?

I';m in the process of finishing my basement. The drywall is up, mudded, and sanded. What are the steps to do a knockdown ceiling? Does it need to be primed first and then do the knockdown? How do you do a knockdown ceiling texture?
go to www.drywall school.com lots of good help and for $10.00 you can get detailed instructions and one on one helpHow do you do a knockdown ceiling texture?
no, you don't prime it, you spray it the same way you would a wall, let it set and then knock down the same way you would a wall. Allow it to dry, then prime it.

It seems like you've done alot of work already mudding and sanding, why would you texture it with knock-down after that??
Contrary to what has been posted.....yes, you DO need to prime the ceiling first.... if you do not.... then the areaa that are drywall, will show thru your texture, as a different color than the areas of joint compound. Ive done this for a living.... if you don't want to have to do it over again....PRIME FIRST, lol.

There are reasons to go ahead and texture a ceiling.. like sound absorption.... in a basement, if you have a concrete floor, this is particularly critical.

If you want to apply knockdown texture, you need a hopper gun, and a good sized air compressor. The 'texture', is actually wall joint compound, that you spray thru the hopper gun.... I'll warn ya now... this is MESSY. Cover everything you don't want texture on, with plastic... including the walls, hehehe. There will be a lot of 'blowback' too... so wear safety glasses, and a dust mask... a cap wouldnt hurt either. Expect to get covered in the stuff, hehehhe. Now... the way a 'knock-down' texture works.... you spray the texture mixture up on the ceiling... let it dry just a bit... and then slide a wide joint knife across it... ';knocking'; it down... literally. You may want to practice a bit first, to get the hang of it. how wet you make the mixture, how heavy you spray it, and how soon you knife it... all these variables will affect the outcome. (Oh, keep the joint knife running in the same direction too!)

That really is all there is to it... the KnockDown Texture, is one of the simplest and easy to apply textures. Prime first!

    Have Fun!
My opinion is slightly different than the 1st posters:

I agree on one point, if you have done a good job on the mudding and the ceiling looks flat, leave it that way. Texturing is simply a way to hide mistakes.

If you still want to texture, then I suggest priming first, here is why -- if you texture straight onto the drywall, you will never get the stuff off. If you prime, then texture, you can scrape it off later if you wish. Additionally, priming the flat ceiling will allow you to see any areas that are not up to snuff. You will be surprised how a good looking ceiling will show problems after priming.

If you prime first and are happy, then you can choose to go flat or texture.

To texture, spray on a popcorn base, then use a large spatula type tool to wipe it down. This gives you something of an orange peel effect. There are many other effects out there.
It's the same as mudding, you need a hopper gun and a compressor. You should tape off the walls, then spray the mud. Wait a bit and knockdown. Then you primer and paint.

How can I paint a wall with texture after removing wall paper?

I just removed wall paper, so now I have a very very smooth drywall. I would like to get the walls to have textured paint look on them, instead of being so smooth.

Do I need to buy a special primer or other item to add a ';paint brush'; texture the walls? Any recommendations? How can I paint a wall with texture after removing wall paper?
You can add texture by getting wall putty and a putty knife and spreading the putty on the wall in the pattern you want...then paint it.How can I paint a wall with texture after removing wall paper?
You can use a bucket of drywall mud to add texture. If you go to lowes they have a bucket with a green lid on, this is what you will want to use. What you want to do is get a gallon of new construction drywall primer, this is also found at lowes. You will need to purchase a larger mixer, it attatches to a drill. Pour the gallon of primer into the bucket of drywall mud and mix it, probally a couple minutes of mixing. After the nud is mixed you will use a 3/4 inch nap roller. Push it down into the bucket of mud until the whole roller is covered then apply it to the wall just like painting. You will know when you will need to repeat this process, the mud will thin. This will give you a streak like teaxture. Good luck and have fun!
go to your local equipment rental place and ask them. they will rent you a machine that makes it easy, tell you about the materials, and it will be pretty cheap.

My brother asked me to do this for my grandmother when he was called away on a job, and I was VERY skeptical, but I did it, and it was way easier than I thought, and turned out fine. The hardest part of the job is taping everything off, then mixing the ingrediants, which takes about 15 minutes, and after that, it is a snap. It is about as difficult as vaccuuming a carpet. you spray this stuff on, if you want a special texture you buy a roller at someplace like Home Depot or a paint store, and it is really a lot easier than you'd think.
There are all kinds of products you can buy at home depot or Lowe's that provide texture.

I used a plaster product that was fairly easy to apply that turned out great but it did require a little know how.

They also have tons of paint products you could use.

Just stop by any local paint department and let them know you want something with texture and they will get you going in the right direction.

    Good luck
You can use a venetian plaster to get a nice textured look, or use a special roller with thick paint. Go to your paint store and talk to the people there, they can show you all kinds of ideas.
In home centers give you the best primer and paint for your project. Use the recommended brush or roller to apply.

Basically you take a thin layer of joint compound ( for drywall) and smoothly coat the walls, usually you have to do 2 coats. you will have to sand it a little after you are done otherwise you will see lines. How do you remove a sand texture paint finish so i can have a smooth wall to repaint?
you can either sdand it down or you can put a thin coat of plaster of joint compound on it but you better be good with the joint cement.
There is a couple of things you can do: You can skim coat the walls with joint compound. Use a wide joint compound knife and apply a very thin coat of mud. Let it dry and sand. If you want a perfect finish and its not to big of an area you can pick up some 3'8 drywall and go right over your existing wall. Also, depending on how hard or secure the sanded paint finish is you can use a sander with a hard grit and try and sand it off. Hope this helps.
That is a tough one. You either have to get a large bucket of Sheetrock mud and go over all the walls and make them smoother. Replace all the sheetrock? Then you can try to remove it by sanding it with a hand sander in a very inconspicuous place, if it is too hard you may want to rethink it and live with the texture and just paint it a couple of good coats and see if it doesn't look better and you can live with it. good luck.
