How do you texture a ceiling?

The style I'm most interested in is what I think is called 'knock down'. It looks like large splatters that have been flattened or scraped somehow. There must be some tricks. I have the texture gun. I'd sure like to get it right the first time. How do you texture a ceiling?
buy whats called a stomp brush. water down slightly some joint compound, stomp on ceiling and drag across with a drywall knife. its called stomp and drag. go to any sherwin williams store and they should be able to lead you in the right direction. im a painting contractor, do it all the time. good luck. tdHow do you texture a ceiling?
Apply the texture by gun/roller/brush. The amount you apply is important. Let it dry 12-24 hours and hit it with a pole sander to take off the tops. It will make painting and cleaning easier.
Texture roller on a long pole.

That's how I did it.
If you have an air compressor capable of 35-40psi, you can buy a spray gun for $30.00. It's called a Homax spray texture gun. They also have a spray can version, although I have never tried it.
