How do you texture a ceiling?

The style I'm most interested in is what I think is called 'knock down'. It looks like large splatters that have been flattened or scraped somehow. There must be some tricks. I have a texture gun. I'd sure like to get it right the first time. How do you texture a ceiling?
Mix up some drywall mud. Make it really wet. If you cant flick it off your finger easily than it's still to thick. Place that into your texture gun and spray your ceilings. Make sure you protect any areas that you don't want messy. Let the spray dry for a little while. When the texture has began to haze over take a cutting board (Like you would buy for protection while spraying paint) and knock down the texture. Allow it to thoroughly dry before painting.

Good Luck!!!How do you texture a ceiling?
i don't know, but i answered your questions, now you can answer more of mine! they are fun!!
After you spray the texture material you use a large plastering trowel to flatten the peaks of the spray, available at Home Depot. By the way, I don't believe texturing is being done any more in most new homes, Particularly on the ceiling.

You might want to reconsider texturing your walls. The trend of flat surfaces is what I use and texturing is used on apartments and cheap starter homes, doing so will date your home and not add value.
If you have a texture gun, then do a test section (upside down) to get the spray nozzle and distance the way you want it. Wait a few minutes. Use a wide (12';) texture blade to knock down the material.
ive mixed paint with premix compound to thickness nedded then rolled on with roller.
I would spend the extra and have a pro come in the sight below should help
