It is just simple joint compound thinned down with water to the consistancy of the existing texture...Home depot carries the texture brush that you need ..here is a picture of it..

you could also use the small plastic trowells that they lay tile adhesive down with-depends on what you want-get some ready made plaster and experiment on a piece of wood
