Do you have to spackle ceilings if you are doing to add texture?

My husband and I are finishing our addition and are completing the drywall ourselves. We plan on using texture on the ceilings, so do we have to spackle? If we have to spackle is it necessary to sand before we put the texture on? We are planning on using texture because the existing rooms already have it. It isn't the popcorn texture, it appears to be a thick material stamped on the ceiling.

Thanks!Do you have to spackle ceilings if you are doing to add texture?
u need to finish it as if u were painting...but dont use spackle use sheetrock mud, USG is a good brand.....mud, tape, mud, sand, mud, sand.....

You'll need to make sure there are no low points, cause these will show up in the finish, I have pictures of texture finishs at my site, spackling is for nics and the like to fill. also when it comes to textures there are all kinds you can do just practice on some drywall scrapes. Good luck

You still have to tape - mud- and sand as you would do any drywall job.Without the proper prep the seams will crack and the screws will show through the texture.
yes it is always best to float over any nails cracks or holes with drywall mud it will not be necessary to sand it unless it is to thick are uneven on the float
