What is the best way to do knockdown texture?

I want to do knockdown texture in my boys room what is the best and easiest way to get the knockdown look. I and to have it look like a pro's worlk. Any advice would be great.What is the best way to do knockdown texture?
First trowel drywall mud on the area to be textured (work in fairly small areas). Then press the flat of the trowel into the wet mud and pull it directly away. That will leave the mud with a series of peaks. Continue on and do the whole work area. After the mud has dried a bit (you will have to trial and error this because it will be different with every different relative humidity) trowel the peaks off. That will leave the base of the peaks as your ';knock down'; texture.What is the best way to do knockdown texture?
